How Far I’ve Come, 2017. Mild steel, bricks, pigmented urethane foam, rubber and four 8 1/2” x 11” pencil drawings. Dimensions Variable. From October 2006 to February 2007 I was incarcerated in Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles, California, facing five years in prison for graffiti vandalism (the four small drawings were part of a series created in a jailhouse dormroom that I shared with over a hundred others). After some time, I was released on house arrest for five months more. From the age of 17-24 I was on formal probation, and when I started school at the University of California, San Diego in 2010, I was technically not even supposed to reside outside of Los Angeles County. On the yellow rubber mat lies a handcuffed torso, sliced and expanded.
